I have always thought that when we're at 'home' we are our truest selves, without having to change for the sake of society. Its our 'safe space'. It was a privilege to be able to go into the resident's homes and experience their everyday environment that many others have not seen. Not only was everyone that I met very hospitable and welcoming, they were also very honest and open about how they felt in their space. As I walked into each living space, I felt a totally different energy but there was one thing that was consistent... pride. The process of taking the portraits was a little different to what some of the residents had expected as I encouraged a good length of time to just sit and chat with them. I needed to know some of their story to be able to share it with others. I also found that the relaxed conversations helped them feel more comfortable in front of the camera. Saira Awan
